Thanks to Adam for the following.
While watching the newscast for Oceanic's abandoned search, I noticed that the financial ticker at the bottom moved at an excruciatingly slow scroll, which indicates to me that this information may be helpful in our search for answers. One would easily assume that this scene takes place in 2004, a few months after the crash, but based on the NASDAQ, DOW, and S&P closings, this actually takes place in 2006!! (January 13th, 2006 to be exact.)
Here's a link to the financial record:

See, I wasnt sure if they would go back in the real timeline and match up the stocks with an actual date, but those 3 stocks scroll by twice when you watch this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c-_pYUASXCY&feature=user (without Sam in the way, newsfeed uninterupted).. I had no choice but to do some investigation work. Maybe it pans out, maybe not but its odd that all the ups downs and round figures add up for Jan 2006's date. Although Im not sure why they have been searching for 2 years and are finally calling it quits, so it may be..luck that this date came up? We'll find out Im sure inevitably.
Good Find
I don't think this happens in 2OO6, but in 2004 just after the crash happened. Because one of the clues is Sunda Trench, and the Sunda is an area in Indonesia, not far from Bali. And in season 3 whe saw that Naomi said that they found the plane in a trench in Bali and then it was december 2004. So how could this be in 2006 if then the plane is already found.
LF, right now I tend to agree, but then again we arent too sure of any timeline right now. Also, Naomi came to the island with a futuristic satellite phone so we dont know specifically when that plane was recovered. But 2004 would make more sense. Its just those stock numbers dont seem to be picked at random.
Ok, heres the thing... Sams computer just popped up a new website which talks about the trench and the 2004 tsunami and how many people died etc... which means we are at least in 2005 otherwise this info wouldnt be on a website for sam, or have a number of people who have conclusively died for the beginning of this arg, so I may actually be right in thinking its a year further than that and actually does lay in Jan of 2006.. hmm.. weird.
The date on the Oceanic press release announcing the resumption of flight service was December 28, 2007. Sam hacked into the video announcing that return to flight status so that would have to make these events happening in real time, i.e. 2008. I know that raises questions with a 4 year search operation but there is a hard date to refer to.
Alright this is long so just bear with me. I just thought of something. With all this debate wondering how it could be 2006 or 7 or 8 with the find815 scenario, when it is still 2004 on the island, a four year search blah blah blah. Well…as we assume (most of us), Richard has aged very slowly on the island and may be very old. In a podcast or something, they also said they will explain the aging of Walt during season 4 coming up. Remember all the talk of the electromagnetic crap where the swan was? And how the island is a big electromagnetic force blah blah? Well maybe OUTSIDE the island…that much time has passed! And walt has aged a little because of his short departure from the island. Just think about it! Im trying! I could add more, but im going to let you guys branch off if you want to.
Maybe you are right ieatgreenfleas about that time-difference on the island, in a trailer from the season 3 blu-ray edition Damon Lindelof said that time and age are all relative on the island. So maybe idd time goes slower on the island and thats why Richard doesn't age because he is born on the island and the others not, so for exemple Ben does age.
This date is very, very incorrect. The Dow has not been as low as 8400s since mid-2003. And since the announcement about abandoning the search for 815 could not have taken place before 815 even took off, the market indices in the video are useless as date clues. Even if you ignore the obvious impossibility of the DOW being at 8424 in 2006 (o_O), and just look at the NASDAQ values, there are plenty of days (even in the middle of 2006) that the NASDAQ could have been around 2316. Jan. 13 2006 is, therefore, neither the conclusive nor the correct date.
