Speculation and thoughts on Matthew and Abaddon

Thanks to The Wife Lady for the following thoughts and speculation.

I was doing some research, like everyone else, into the meanings behind some of the clues that we have recieved from the website.

I haven't noticed if anyone else has posted this question to the group, but I thought that if I asked you, you could either propose it to the group, or tell me that its already been done.

I was curious about the fact that there was 2 passwords given after the Pack Sams Bag activity. So I looked the words up, there is a Matthew Is in French Polynesia, which is cool. Its ties in, the french woman, french polynesia, password clue to the Oceanic Hotline.

Then there is Abaddon, I have Encarta on my computer, and in the english dictionary this is a copy of it:
A·bad·don [ə bádd'n]
noun
1. devil: in Christianity, the devil of the bottomless pit
2. depths of Hell: in Christianity, the bottomless pit of Hell
[15th century. abaddon "the place of destruction"]
Microsoft® Encarta® 2007. © 1993-2006 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

Then on the web, on wikipedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abaddon_(demon)

Abaddon (Hebrew:אבדון,Avaddon - destruction, abyss) , in demonology, was chief of the demons of the seventh hierarchy. He was called The Destroyer and, in the Book of Revelation, St John called him the King of the locusts (Rev 9: 7-11).
The Thanksgiving Hymns—a copy was also found in the Dead Sea Scrolls—tells of "the Sheol of Abaddon" and of the "torrents of Belial [that] burst into Abaddon". The Biblical Antiquities of Philo mentions Abaddon as a place (sheol, hell), not as a spirit or demon or angel. In Paradise Regained, Milton also uses Abaddon as a place—the pit. It appears to have been St. John who first personified the term to stand for an angel. In the 3rd century Acts of Thomas, Abaddon is the name of a demon, or the Devil himself. Abaddon has also been identified as the angel of death and destruction, demon of the abyss, and chief of demons of the underworld hierarchy, where he is equated with Samael or Satan. In magic and alchemy, Abaddon is the Destroying Angel of the Apocalypse. In Barrett's The Magus, Abaddon is pictured, in colour, as one of the evil demons. In Medieval legend, Abaddon was considered as a synonym for Hell and/or the ruler thereof, and in Revelations 9:7-11, he was the Christian angel of Hell. The Hebrew word abadon, from which the name is derived, means "destruction" (Job 26:6 and Psalms 88:11).
Abaddon has also been considered the Hebrew name for the Greek god Apollyon.[citation needed]
Not long after Judeo-Christian teachings taught the name of this demon, Abaddon referred to the pit or cave that was used in mystery religions and schools as a rite of passage into the greater mysteries. Often the experience would entail the use of ritual substances that put the aspirant into an altered state in which he or she could receive divine revelation. Because the experience was sometimes unpleasant, this rite came to be viewed as being "hellish." However, it was considered absolutely necessary so that the seeker may become pure enough to encounter the "mind of God", as an angel is described as the "Angel of the bottomless pit who binds Satan for a thousand years".
In occultism and esoterism, Abaddon is related to blood red, brown and green colours, winter, the month of January, Saturday, intuition, sacrifice and challenge, the ruby and the sword. His Tarot symbol is the one of judgement.

This is going along the same way as saying that they are all dead, they just don't realize it yet. Strange,
I was watching the Lost season 2 dvd last night watching the extras, and I unlocked an easter egg of Evagline Lily talking about the Losties being the best kinda test subjects since they had no one left on the outside to miss them, with the mysteries of the numbers added into the knowledge of the fist avg, this theory seems good.

I just wanted to see what the other people on the site thought about this information

Ok, not sure if this connects any dots or not...With Abaddon relating to demonology, could there be some connection with James Clerk Maxwell? One of his theories was "Maxwell's Demon."

its been confirmed by TBTB that the survivors are NOT in some form of purgatory, however the second theory seemed likely. also maxwell seems related to the 'maxwell group' of equations about electromagnetism (as in the swan station). nice info!

Abbadon's description sounds a lot like the Monster. Perhaps, this is it's true name, not Cerberus. They key similarity is judgment and revelation. It did this sort of quest with characters, most recently, Eko who had the revelation that he didn't regret anything, that it was all for his brother. The Monster issued its judgment and Eko was killed.

For the occultism section, some motifs of Jacob in the Bible were these bottles of soup that were blood red. A color associated with Abbadon.

St John referred to it as the "King of Locusts." The Monster's appearance does somewhat resemble a swarm of locusts.

Interesting find.

If you want to connect Jacob with Abaddon, Jacob wrestles with a man in the Bible, Genesis chapter 32. Jacob holds on and won't let the man go until the man tells him his name. Knowing the secret name would give Jacob power over him. Instead, the man touches Jacob, giving him a limp and a new name, Israel. Afterward, Jacob/Israel says he has seen the face of God, so the man he wrestles with is seen to divine in some way in some interpretations. There have been many traditions about this story, including one that names the "man" whom Jacob wrestled as the angel Abaddon.

what if the abaddon knows them, hence the dossiers on the losties, and they have to bettle their pasts to be able to be redeemed, like Jack being a leader, and Kate not being a fake, Charlie not a junkie, Sawyer not a con man.... just a thought, thanks everyone for posting!
