Broadcast From the Past?

Hello Everyone!

The latest development in the Find815 game is a broadcast reporting on the disappearance of Amelia Earhart. Has our insanity been proven sanity?!

Uh, Australia is not "in the future." Australia is in a different time zone that is ahead of yours based on your positioning w/r/t the international date line. But you both exist "in the present" not in some arbitrary "past" or "future."

JEEZE, guy.

I see what you mean, but "time-traveling" by traveling across the world isn't really the same as moving through time, simply because traveling through the man-made labels of the time isn't the same as traveling through the physical time-line.
For instance, you can't travel across the world back to before 1937 and warn Amelia Earhart about disapearing.
And now I'm rambling, so I'll just leave with my first thought of it.

I want to say it's as simple as back in earlier seasons when Sayid and Hurley fixed that radio and they picked up the old radio station with old music on it.
(Maybe even the same radio waves, which could mean Sam is getting close to the island, and it could possibly be around the time-frame.)

The date line just confuses me... :\
I do think the broadcast has something to do with time travel, and I think the idea of slipping through a "gap" in time, as confusing as it sounds, is very interesting.

It's a hole or wrinkle in time...

I really hope this is just a terrible joke.

You do realize that time zones are arbitrary creations of man, right? RIGHT?

Or that existing in the "same time" is semi irrelevant, since all of us live in marginally difference space times anyways due to differences in perceived realities from stimuli around us, different altitudes, different masses influencing us, etc.

It is Daniel Faraday

This was brought up Video 2.5 comment bored and pointed out by dr. candles that radio waves can go on forever. I did some googling and found some references that say once radio waves are out there they continue to transmit in the ether indefinately so it is possible to pick up past radio transmissions or for old radio waves to be picked up in outer space.

Michael Faraday, scientist did work with EM that can help explain this and Daniel Faraday is a new character. Coincidence?

Amelia Earhart!? I Swear if that lil ol' lady from the book club is Amelia Earhart I'm going to go buy a shark and a pogo stick...

I don't think it could be as simple as you describe, I mean.. travelling in time isn't at all like taking the bus and going back and forth.

this case reminds me of a fact I had read in a science book a long time ago:
that if there could be a telescope in an other planet far beyond our galaxy and if it could work as precicely as to see our little Earth and take a close look at us, the image it would receive would be one of our primitive ancestors that lived in caves.
and this was explained by the way light travels through space, eg how much time it would take it to cross a distance of millions of light years in its 300.000km/sec velocity.
so the question is, where is Sam's boat now?

Exactly

I think the lady in the Book Club is her. The resemblance is remarkable for starters. Second, the name and now the radio broadcast. Its strange, but really would we except anything else from Lost?

Unless it is caught is and electromagnetic storm or as the movie Frequency (father/son able to communicate 30 years apart) explained it an aurora borealis. This wiki page talks more about it http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aurora_borealis. It also mentions Michael Faraday.

I think five years from now Ashley Tisdale will be the biggest celebrity.

Oh in response to Clay and Maik you are both right about us not being in the past and in the future so to speak as it is all happening at the same moment. If it weren't for the rising and setting of the sun we would all be running on a global clock. Yet many of us find it easier to live in the light and sleep in the dark. THat is why we have time zones..and if it were that we were going to run on factual information I would have to say that the show LOST is very far fetched in the line of Jacob and Smoke Monsters. That is why I am just trying to get your imaginations rolling...meaning that you need to use the imagination that you might use while watching Alice in Wonderland. =] hahahaha

Something I came up with as I was watching it is connected to Desmond's 'snowglobe' comment.

What if radio signals get stuck inside the island's snow globe and bounce around.

Also, I'm starting to think Earhart crashed on the island.

LONG POST WARNING :)

That's got it. From what I understand, radio waves can theoretically propagate 'forever', think of the back ground radiation from the big bang that is still detectable today. It would have to be a very 'specially' tuned (or something) to be able to detect, something like, 50 year old radio wave, or possibly an anomaly in the 'fabric' of the radio waves (related to E/M waves, as well). So that leaves the possibly that the radio signals CAN be explained scientifically, with out taking the leap into 'time-travel' (as in matter traveling 'through' time). This could give weight to the idea that Sam is nearing the Island region and the E/M fields are 'warped' (or something) there.
The time-frame... don't know :)

So what do you all think. I know someone will let me know how I'm wrong ;)

I agree with monk satry. I was thinking that there are auroras on both poles, and AU is very south, and if the magnetic field in the hatch is any indication of what the island is made of... Then it could be said that theorectically, the magnetic field of the island with the EM of the earth could work against each other defraying the light and possible the visibility. Hence Michael being given specific coordinates to be rescued... The light creates like a myst, like avalon sorta. that could explain why the radio waves were there too, they are trapped in the "snow globe effect".

I would like the radio report to be from the past, but I think it must have something to do with electromagnetics and the waves being "caught" there. That's one thing.
Second, you guys talk about how time zones are man made, but forget all the time that time as we know it, years, hours, days, minutes are man-made, too. Nature itself doesn't need the calculation of time, we do. Nature has her own cycles and they go on and on forever, not caring for hours, minutes or years. So stop the rambling. Yes, this article was written rather... geeky and more "Back to the Future"-like than the pseudoscientific way (yes, PSEUDOscientific) than we're used to, but give the guy a break.
Last, but not least, Hurley and Sayid DID NOT LISTEN TO A RADIO FROM THE PAST! They caught a short-wave station which happened to broadcast old music, as they usually do. I work in a short wave station, the International Radio of Serbia, and we broadcast our program in 13 languages on short wave and it can be heard all over the world (I work in the german program, lol). Very well known short wave stations are the BBC, Deutsche Welle, Radio China, Radio France International, The Vatican Radio, and almost every country has it's own short wave radio station, as it was always used to send your information out to the world. So, chill. Hurley and Sayid did not have ANYTHING to do with "radio from the past".

So this report could mean two things: Sam is now in the past, somehow, or he got that report from waves which have been caught there... somehow.

@jesus:

Nah, Vanessa Hudgens.

I jest. But anyway, I haven't got a chance to hear the broadcast yet. I'm on a school computer :[ Will have to listen at home.

I too agree with monksatyr and wifelady.

I believe there truly is no time-travel involved. I think the Amelia broadcast was from old radio waves just bouncing around in the area. I too believe that may be Amelia Earhart on the island, and for a long time she may have tried to get off the island, but the scientists have developed some sort of serum or something that keeps her much younger than she should be, so she probably does not want to leave.

Wifelady, I liked your idea of some sort of mist over the island that keeps it "invisible" to the ouside world. The mist is there as a result of the Electro Magnetic activity around the island.

This is why I think the island has never really been "found".... if you sail or fly too close to it, your instruments start going out of whack. You then either crash into the island or immediately turn your ship/plane around, until the instruments function normally again.

I believe that the island was like this from the beginning of time in some ways, but that the scientists of DHARMA came and messed with the properties of the island, causing the 108-minute protocol, etc.

Somehow I think this will explain the Smoke Monster, too.

Also,... this may explain why the food is dropped from a very high plane with a parachute, rather than the food-drop plan coming in closer to the island.

I think BBC was mentioned earlier. Are we sure it wasn't just a random special on Amelia Earhart on the Beeb? I know CBCradioONE has weird specials like that every once and a while...

Unknown said...

With regard to the 'radio broadcast from the past' - yes both (Sam's and Hurley/Sayid's) broadcasts could just be 'specials' on a short wave. When first watching the Hurley/Sayid scene I thought to myself, 'hmmm, maybe they are pulling a kind of Orson Wells halloween alien invasion thing on us'? (had a similar suspicion during the earhart broadcast)

Now this could be what is going on - no 'snow-globe' effect, no weird warping of the E/M fabric, etc etc. But I just like the idea so much that I'll stick with it till I'm pretty sure it's wrong ;)
