well, the Sunda trench region is aparently "related" to the Bermuda triangle.. many boats and plains are said to have dissapeared over there, so... if it's anything like the Bermuda triangle, the instruments will have many problems over there too! possibly meltdowns and glitches...
Oceanic ridges often create magnetic anomalies because of the magnetite in the crust. The magnetic polarity can be the opposite of magnetic north. Deep sea trench are something different, but maybe it's related.
1miletogo: Before! They have to find the wreckage before Cooper gets kidnapped from Knoxville -- sometime in mid-November -- because he mentions seeing it on TV to Sawyer.
I posted this on another page, but thought it works well here, too:
I have a different theory on this Christiane 1 boat...
the Sunda TRENCH sounds to me like a deep area of the ocean. I think someone is/or already has buried a "bunk" plane with "bunk" passengers on it at the bottom of the ocean.
I think this may be all a setup to "find" the bunk ship/plane, thus letting the world know to stop wondering about the survivors.
Basically, I think someone doesn't want the Losties found, because they'd make such excellent lab rats if they stayed on the island. To keep the "world" from looking for the Losties and possibly uncovering craphole island, they (and by "they" it could be Hanso, Widemore... whoever is funding Ben and "The Others") either HAVE staged or WILL stage a fake plane down there with fake passengers.
My personal theory is that the fake plane has already been placed in the trench, and top officials on the Christiane know about it and are setting out, based on some sort of "anonymous tip," to uncover the plane. Maybe Oceanic itself is involved?
Also: I believe all of this is happening about a month or so before Naomi parachutes onto the island. Therefore, she would have heard through news reports that 815 and the passengers were all "found."
1miletogo: This trip is taking place in present time. Remember that Sam's web browser shows the Oceanic website with the link to the press release anouncing flights resuming as of Dec. 31 2007. The biggest question for me, should they find the plane wreckage (be it real or faked by hanso/widmore/paik) in the trench, is how Naomi knew about the plane wreckage being found. This would have to assume 1 of 2 possibilities:
1)Naomi is from the future. 2)Naomi was involved in the placement of the wreckage in the trench, years before it would be found.
It sure will be interesting to see where this game goes!
I think Sam's trip is taking place in late 2004... in his video diary, he said that "815 vanished September 22."
He didn't specify a year, (such as, "815 vanished September 22, three years ago... (or) it vanished September 22, 2004.".... which leads me to believe it's still close to the time when the plane crashed. I'm thinking he made that video diary within 2 months or so after the crash of 815...it would be reasonable to think that they would call off an investigation after a few months of no answers.
So does sam have a laptop that is able to download pdf press releases from the future??? I just went and checked. The Oceanic press release is dated December 28, 2007.
I agree with melissadab. Every reference to dates in the game have been deleted. It's purposely vague.
As far as the Oceanic press releases and advertising: The press releases don't have to do with the search for 815, they deal with Oceanic Airlines restarting -- meaning they were defunct for a period of time. I can only assume they went bankrupt after Flt 815 was found in late 2004, and in 2008 they're starting up again.
If that's the date, why not date all of his emails. Why delete the info about the 2004 tsunami off of the Sunda Trench site? It's purposely vague for a reason. The only thing that has a definite date is the "announcement" (the Oceanic press release) that the ARG is starting -- and that has to have a realtime date since, you know, we're playing in realtime. It was a mistake to put it on Sam's laptop.
I can't believe it was a mistake. That web page on Sam's laptop serves no other purpose than to point you toward that press release.
With regard to the email dating, I think the dates are not provided so the people in charge of game continuity aren't ripping their hair out on every detail. (and also to simplify the design/format)The big clues are provided in the email content.
Fair enough, but for it to be 2008 in the ARG, both Naomi and Cooper will have to have lied on the show about the wreckage of 815 being found in a trench. Am I also to believe the official search for 815 lasted three full years? And why is Oceanic RETURNING to the airways, as the press release states? There are no indications within the ARG (except for that one press release) that the Airline ever stop flying. The videos give no impression that there is some sort of relaunch.
The press release on Sam's laptop could be in regard to the crash. We can't click on the link to view it in his point of view. The video that Sam hacked did not say anything about Oceanic returning to business.
I think what we see is find815 is in early December 2004.
We see the flyoceanic airlines site in 2008 with a different press release saying that they are returning to business.
The other press release about Oceanic closing down was posted on the original site at http://www.oceanic-air.com/
makes perfect sense..the only mention of dates on the hacked site is on the press release which has to be downloaded...so this link could have been added later..if you know what i mean
First off this game is clearly using some known references form the show. If you couple that with the press release date (which still remains) of 12/28/2007 and the promos for the show, which clearly state that the plane went down in September 2004 and in January 2008 the "Lost" are found. When Naomi parachuted onto the island last May she in fact was in her time which was mid January 2008. It is how they will eventually explain Walt's growth.
I think that Christiane I is the ship that will come to "rescue" Jack and the others. Mr. Talbot said that everyone on board had been screened and checked out. Even the captain said that everyone on board is there for specific duties and that they wouldn't be back anytime soon.
All signs seem to point to the producers playing with time. Time passing faster off island than on. This explains Walts rapid aging, The Mittelos Bioscience CT Scan of a 26yr old that looks like a 70yr old, and the time needed for Driveshaft to produce & distribute a new CD, and a lot of other clues... "Fools are enslaved by time and space"
Unike TLE this ARG is tied directly to the show. Sam has members of the cast in his manifest, the reborn of Oceanic Air is flying to locations related to characters, the picture of Henry Gale's balloon on Sam's desk on the ship, the interest in the Sunda Trench, and so on. It will be interesting to see if the Christiane I is large enough for helo operations. That coupled with the fact that ABC in it's promos for the show is emphasizing the 3 1/2 year lag between the crash and them being found and TPTB constantly infering different timelines leads me to believe the timelines are about to merge.
Remember also, Naomi's Sat-phone used touch screen technology similar to the I-phone, not around in 2004, and unknown to Sayid who is well versed in electronic devices. Once again tied to the show but this ARG seems more designed to backfill plot and build intrest for the premiere.
I don't expect to see any crossover of these characters into the series, (in fact I would be HIGHLY surprised if the Christiane is "the freighter") but they are definitely backfilling...and it's all very interesting.
I don't expect any crossover either, just keep hearing from TPTB that the first 8 episodes raise more questions and the 8 that will probably be lost had lots of answers. I think this and the mobisodes are a kind of damage control. If not on the 31 when the game ends and S4 premieres there's gonna be some mighty unhappy folks.
The writers of the game might be keeping references to the date to a minimum to preserve the game for future players, unlike tle we are watching what Sam is doing and taking over from him at certain points, it would be annoying if after watching a few show of series 4 I found 'the hack' and then had to pretend that what I was watching happened a few weeks ago, if this game was set in the past that would not be an issue.
Plus the only indications we have are in favour of the game being now. The hack is talking to me (and I know what year it is) and Sam's facebook and myspace are active now, the phone number is active now and the graffiti on the billboards just happened now. In fact setting the game in the past would cause more conceptual problems than Rachel Blake's acknowledgement of 'the tv show Lost' did. For the writers of the game to ask me to believe that when I'm playing the game, I am in the past and that the billboards exist some time in the past, and that when I'm viewing Sam's profiles and blog that they are in the past, is just too much suspension of disbelief. I will concede that the more narrative nature (than tle) give the game a little room, in that because it seems that at times we are playing the role of Sam but at other times it is obvious that I as supposed to be me, Stuart, following clues (the phone line, the zkillen email and messenger interaction, Maxwell Group site and the billboards).
The in favour of the game being in the past column seems to have only one entry the words of Naomi and Cooper. But...We have no reason to think what they said is true (or that their words are their own). We know where flight 815 and it's passengers are (one thing we do know to be true is that the losties are not ghosts) and it's not the Sunda Trench. The guy on the boat that Jack talks to doesn't seem surprised when Jack tells him they are from 815.
If Naomi and Cooper came to the island from the Future then coolio, our Sam might find a fake 815 in the sea (faked by who is the question, do Jack and Kate and the world know the answer by the time of the flash forward?). But to use a bit of David Hume on miracles (an Ockham's razor argument) it just make more sense to believe are game is happening in the same time frame as the discussion on this board. http://plato.stanford.edu/entries/miracles/
For people to go legally from Missing to Dead does in fact take a number of years although granted the 'search' as such, would have been called off long before that happened
Oh and a major record label could have a 'best of' album in the shops in a week if it wanted. Which only leaves the 'iphone' which on it's own isn't very convincing.
The more I look at it they are backfilling story that doesn't warrant the limited airtime they have to flesh out their story to a satisfying conclussion. It wouldn't surprise me to see at least two more ARG's, constructed to close up loose ends that they don't have time to address on the show properly without just randomly dropping something in in a FB or FF.
What still gets me... if this game is supposed to take place present-day (2008,) why... in Sam's video diary... does he say that the plane disappeared Sept. 22, without giving a year? If it's late 2007/early 2008, wouldn't he have said Sept. 22, 2004?
We don't know why or if Cooper was brought to the Island and we have no idea who Naomi is or who she is working for, so it is very hard to speculate about why they might lie, but the might.
Its my gut feeling that Naomi isn't working for Widmore, although there are lots of reasons why Penny wouldn't know what Charlie was talking about, when they speak in “Through the Looking Glass” (and you have to ask your self how much sense it makes that Penny who off the Island is talking to Charlie from a different year) so it isn't conclusive by any means but I get the feeling that it really isn't “Penny's boat”... Is Naomi from a group of 'other others'?
Also I don't want too much of a pedant but the game wont conclude with us finding Flight 815 because one of the few hard and fast facts we have, is that Flight 815 clashed on a weird island. Unless it is in two places at the same time (Walt style?) but that doesn't seem to like good story telling to me.
The thing about Sam not saying the year just the date is a bit of a sticking point that I'd not spotted... urrmm well people say September the 11th or even the 11th of the 11th (armistice day) with out the year and that is an O.K use of language...but yes that is a bit tenuous.

This can be answered easily.
Sunda Trench
Electromagnetism
The question is, is the trip to Sunda Trench before or after 12/26/04?
Oceanic ridges often create magnetic anomalies because of the magnetite in the crust. The magnetic polarity can be the opposite of magnetic north. Deep sea trench are something different, but maybe it's related.

Also deep sea trenches and ocean ridges *are* related in that they are a result of plate tectonics.
Maybe they pass near an ocean ridge on their way to the Sunda Trench.
the chart plotter should give us a hint!!
maybe somewhere related to earthquakes,
could it be tsunami?
I posted this on another page, but thought it works well here, too:

I hope it's a faked plane -- by Widmore -- and not a second or alternate Flight 815 that was created when the airliner flew over the island.

Why would BOTH Naomi and Cooper lie? They are seemingly unrelated people brought to the island by vastly different interests.
IMO, the final conclusion of this ARG will be Sam (and us!) helping to find 815 in a trench. We will probably find out he was manipulated by Widmore.
What still gets me... if this game is supposed to take place present-day (2008,) why... in Sam's video diary... does he say that the plane disappeared Sept. 22, without giving a year? If it's late 2007/early 2008, wouldn't he have said Sept. 22, 2004?
